Quote:For a contributing citizen to be realesed from the community was a final decision, a terrible punishment, an overwhelming statement of failure.
Reaction: I don't think it is really fair.I don't think it is fair because if you get realesed only for a punishment.I think that you should be able to choose whether you can be realesed or not.Or at least your family can be able to choose if you can whether go or not.Just like it says on the quote I also think it is a terrible punishment. Finally I think that it is an overwhelming statement of failure because if you get realesed for a punishment you will never be able to come back and you won't see your family for a very, very, very long time,or even you won't be able to see youe parents at all. That's how I felt when I went to Las Vegas for a very, very, very long time.
Chapter 2
Quote:"But to be honest,Jonas,"his father said,"for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony.Because I was already fairly certain of what my assignment was to be.
Reaction:that's cool when you turn "twelve" in their society,in December, they make you something which is called "The Ceremony of twelve" and Jonas is really happy because of it.But his father keeps on explaining that you gat an assignment, which is really considerd a job.I would be really nervous if I had to get a job at that age because I don't live like that and I never will until I am 18 or older.I also would be really nervous because the elders would be watching you if you're doing a good job. Finally I just want to keep on reading the book to see what is going to happen next.
Chapter 3
Quote:The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade.
Reaction:I wonder if Jonas has a special ability thatt no one else has or is he hurt in the brain? How can he notice that the apple changed in mid-air and Asher didn't?Is Jonas seeing things that only he can see?Why did he see the apple change and notice it come back to normal? If he has a special ability or something that would be so cool and i was also wondering if he has a special ability i would like to know how he got it.
Chapter 4
Quote: "What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go?"
Reaction:That's a really good question?Where do these people really go?Do they just dissapear or do they go someplace else?Who knows?Maybe they do someting really bad that the community doesn't like and they throw him someplace elseand wait untill he dies for not liking their community.Perhaps the elders have a utopia of their pwn let's find out!
Chapter 5
Quote: You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for stirrings.
Reaction:Stirrings I think those are dreams that are to akward to talk about anyone. But why would you have to take medication for it.Is it illegal or something to have those kind of dreams.Or is it not good to have those kind of dreams.I still wonder why you still have to take medication for it.Anyways I still think that it is a waste of medication.
Chapter 6
Quote:It was as if the first Caleb were returning.
Reaction:The first Caleb drowned. Then in the Naming and Placement Ceremony a new child was named Caleb.Next they said he was just like the first one.I felt so sad when the first Caleb drowned and they replace him with another kid named Caleb. That's just wrong that they replace the first Caleb with another child.I wouldn't like it if my parents replaced me with another Johnny.
Chapter 7
Quote: He couldn't seem to stop, though for each lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually, for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when he was a Three.
Reaction:That's so sad why would they hit three years old with a weapon I wouldn't like it if my teachers hit me with a weapon. But anyways what does hitting three years old teach them? What if the kids did something back to the teacher? What would the teachers do back to them?He only kept on mixing words up and they smacked Asher.Next whenever Asher said something he said it right. When I first heard this I felt so sad why couldn't they just tell him the words he said wrong and then he learns from it.Maybe if they did that Asher would feel more happy.
Chapter 8
Quote:Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory .
Reaction:In the previous chapter in "The Ceremony of twelve",the chief elder had skipped Jonas when it was his turn to receive his assignment. When I first read it I couldn't believe that they had skipped Jonas and they had told him that he had not been selected to be the reciever of memory.I couldn't believe that they had skipped Jonas and had not given him an assignment. But then when they apologized to him they told him that he had been selected to be their next reciever of memory.I was so fascinated at the end now I jut wsnt to keep on reading the book.DON'T YOU?
Chapter 9
Quote:Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory.
Reaction:I wonder what SHE had did wrong.During the ceremony the Chief Elder told everyone that the last selection that they had made for being the reciever of memory had failed. After Jonas had been really anxious about what had happened to the other reciever of Memory .He asked his parents, they said that they weren't allowed to speak about it.My opinion is maybe she didn't do the job right so then they assigned the job to Jonas.
Chapter 10
Quote:He couldn't imagine what the thousands of pages contained.
Reaction:Jonas had never seen this many books before and they contain a whole bunch of pages. All the books he has ever experienced were a Dictionary,a Community Volume, and the Book of Rules. Why can't they just have books like we do in school? Why do they only have three books can't they just have more books, they can at least have a Math,Nonfiction, and Fiction books.IS it because maybe they will be really smart or once their done with the book they will think a lot about the book/I wouldn't like the idea of having only three bokks because I wouldn't be very interested and I wouldn't learn as much as I can with having A LOT of other books for example I would be much interested if wthey at least had six or seven books.
Chapter 11
Quote:"Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?"
Reaction:No snow?No sleds? No hills? Why wouldn't you have those three things? Is it because you will probably get really injured? What if your on Vacation there's going to be nothing to do.And even if there were sleds how would you be able to have fun without any snow?If you had snow how would you be able to have fun without a sled. Finally if you had hills how would you be able to have fun without Snow, and Sleds? The only thing I can think of to have fun with only Mountains would be just to keep on running around and around the Mountains a lot of time or until you are really tired.
Chapter 12
Quote:We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely.
Reaction:Jonas had been talking to the Giver about Fionas hair, the apple ,and the peoples faces in the ceremony.I think that Jonas was really mad.The Giver told him ti was because he was seeing the color red for the first time.He said that he had been seeing the color red because they had taken color and sunshine and a lot more because the people chose sameness. But Jonas said that they shouldn't have taken away that decision.I think that Jonas was right. Now I just want to keep on reading the story.
Chapter 13
Quote:"We really have to protect people from wrong choices."
Reaction:Jonas still wants colors to be in his community and he asks the giver why they can't vote if they can still keep the color. The Giver also said if they did make the wrong choice and thats when when Jonas realizes that the world would be chaos.Thats one problem that I wish would go away in our society.I mean like some people get married and then they get divorced. Also people chose their own life and then they make the wrong decisions.
Chapter 14
Quote:Would it grow up Elsewhere, not knowing, ever, that in this community lived a being who looked exactly the same?
Reaction:At this point of the story, there is a woman who is going to have twins and only one of the babies can stay in the community and be given to a family. The way they are going to pick the them out is by their weight and the one who weighs less is going to be released into elsewhere. So, Jonas is telling his father that if the one who goes Elsewhere will never know that he has a twin in the community that was raised in a different way. I think that maybe they one day will find each other again if one visits the others community. But anyways for now they have the decision made but maybe they will change their mind somewhere in the book.
Chapter 15
Quote:The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said.
Reaction:In this part, at first when Jonas entered the Annex room, the Giver had a terrible pain and told Jonas to take the pain away of a memory. So Jonas took off his tunic and laid down on the bed and the Giver gave him the memory of warfare. Then when it ended the Giver knew it was a bad memory to give Jonas and felt guilty that he gave that kind of a memory to the next receiver in training. At that point I knew that the Giver was starting to like Jonas and to spend time with him in the room. So I knew that as time passed in the training that the Giver would care for Jonas more and more until he completely cares for him at the end. Could the Giver be Jonas's real dad?
Chapter 16
Quote:Quote: "And they won't be part of my life anymore. . . And they'll be well cared for and respected."
Reaction:Why do the kids in the community forget about their parents? Why don't the sons and daughters take care of their parents? How can they even let their parents go to the House of the Old? How come the old forget about their kids? Why are the Old forced to go the House of the Old? Do any of the Old ever refuse to go? What happens if the Old try to leave the House? Are the family members allowed to visit? Do they ever leave the House? Do they ever have to work? Do they have their own bikes?
Chapter 17
Quote:Quote: "Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the newchild.
Reaction:Why did he make it sound like releasing a baby was nothing? How come the don't keep both of the babies and give one twin to one parent and the other to another person? Why doesn't Jonas' dad even ask where the baby goes to? He acts like if the baby is meaningless? How come the baby has to be released? Does Jonas' dad even care that the baby is being released?
Chapter 18
I thought that was just pure evil. Just killing a baby then throwing him away! They were treating him like garbage. Just treating it like it was nothing, to me, was just wrong and disturbing.
Chapter 19
I thought that was just pure evil. Just killing a baby then throwing him away! They were treating him like garbage. Just treating it like it was nothing, to me, was just wrong and disturbing.
Chapter 20
Quote:"Her name was Rosemary."
Reaction:OMG! I would of never guessed that Rosemary was the Givers daughter. I was shocked when I read the quote. I was sad because she got released and to be released is that you get a shot and you die. I was sad yet all my questions got answered from the previous chapter. So sad :'[
Chapter 21
Quote:"First thing tomorrow morning."
Reaction:Jonas is going to escape but where to? Its elsewhere but where is elsewhere? Also will it work as expected? Well it doesnt go exsctly as expected but but he does escape. Hope he survives.
Chapter 22-23
No quotes. Just write how you think the book ended. Did they make it alive to a new community, or did they die? Provide support for your opinion. Use evidence from the text. If you're not sure, give evidence for both sides.
Answer: Well my ending is that he dies. I think Gabriel dies first because it says that Gabriels eyes were closed and that they saw lights and they were surrounded by snow which is the color white and so the elsewhere is heaven. That's my ending.
